Historical Markers

Nevada has over 260 roadside markers that bring visitors' attention to Nevada's heritage.  In 1967, the Nevada State Legislature initiated the marker program to commemorate events as well as places, including the Old Spanish Trail through Southern Nevada, the story of Diamondfield Jack Davis in Jackpot, Ellko County and the great train robbery in Verdi, outside of Reno.  The State Historic Preservation Office coordinates with the Nevada Department of Transportation to prepare text, create the markers and maintain them.

In the past, the State Historic Preservation Office welcomed applications for new markers, but due to budget cuts in 2009 the program has become dormant:  new markers will not be installed and markers threatened by vandals and the environment are not likely to be repaired.
